Rainbow Mountain
The Rainbow Mountain is an attraction that gained recent popularity in Cusco because of its beautiful colorful landscapes in the Andes of Peru. ITINERARIO
Pre-Departure Briefing - Cusco
On the day before our Rainbow Mountain Tour, we will have a briefing headed by our tour guide. This talk is given to all travelers for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. It is important to attend the briefing because, at this moment, you will learn about each moment of the trip in detail. Moreover, remember that if you have any doubts before the trip this is the perfect moment to ask. At the end, you will receive the final advice before the departure, such as what to wear during the trip, how the climate in the sites you will visit, and more!
DAY 01 - Cusco - Cusipata – Rainbow Mountain - Cusco
We will start the tour very early, by picking you up in your accommodation. Our private transportation will take you to Cusipata town, after a ride of about 2 hours. In this town, we will have breakfast in a local family restaurant, and then we will continue our trip to Pulawasipata for one more hour. After reaching this site, we will start the one hour and a half hike to the Mountain. You may even want to take a horse ride here because the altitude makes it a bit demanding.
Later, we will reach the highest point in the viewpoint of the mountain, at above 5100 m of altitude. We will be able to observe the Ausangate peak in this place, and all the majestic Rainbow Mountain as well. The weather conditions play an important role in having the best view of the place. It is recommended to visit it on sunny days and during the dry season for a better experience. Later, we will return by walking, rest, and have lunch in the Pitumarca district to finally return to Cusco in our transportation, we will be arriving there at around 6:30 pm.

Consider the season and time of your travel: Cusco has two main seasons throughout the year. In the first place, the dry season goes from May to October and it is characterized by its popularity and absence of rain, this is the high season. On the other hand, the low season goes from November to March and it is characterized by its rainy days. You can visit Rainbow Mountain any time of the year. Nevertheless, during the rainy season, you may find it covered by snow. The best time to appreciate its colors would be from April to October.
Take basic precautions on altitude sickness: This is a little demanding tour, because of the altitude. However, you will stand it better because you won’t walk too much. Remember that Cusco is above 3000 m. and the Rainbow Mountain is above 5000 m. so don’t miss out on adequate acclimatization before you start your adventures outside the city. We recommend also drinking coca leaf tea, and hot water during the tour.
Pack smartly: Bring just what you will need, but prepare for the season of your visit. The Rainbow Mountain has an Andes cold weather. We recommend bringing layering clothes, a jacket, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, toiletries, and personal items. Don’t forget to get some cash for tickets, and to buy snacks along the way.
